Busan City will operate the ‘Busan Human Rights Week’ from the 8th to the 15th to commemorate Human Rights Day (12.10.), marking the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in order to reflect on the meaning of the declaration and to help human rights culture become more familiar to citizens.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an international declaration adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. It presents common standards for all countries and all people to realize the value of human dignity and respect, and based on this, various international human rights treaties have been established, contributing to the advancement of human rights worldwide.
The city promotes the meaning and spirit of the declaration and raises citizens’ awareness of human rights by designating the period around December 10 as Human Rights Week for focused promotion.
This year’s Human Rights Week, under the theme ‘Human Rights City 樂, Glad to be Busan,’ will host various human rights cultural events throughout Busan in collaboration with the Busan Human Rights Center, Busan Police Agency, National Human Rights Commission, district and county offices, and human rights organizations.
First, on the morning of the 8th, the opening day of Human Rights Week, a ‘Human Rights Day Commemoration Ceremony’ will be held at 10:20 AM in the City Hall auditorium.
The event will be attended by Mayor Park Hyung-jun, City Council Chairperson Ahn Seong-min, local human rights organizations, the Human Rights Commission, and general citizens. The program includes ▲commemorative speeches and congratulatory remarks ▲awards ceremony for the human rights artwork contest ▲screening of a commemorative video ▲reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ▲human rights theater ▲choral performances.
From December 11 to 15, various cultural events will be held in earnest. These include a human rights conference on measures to promote the rights of socially vulnerable groups, book talks, exhibitions, performances, and a human rights cultural festival. Human rights education will also be provided for public officials and community leaders to further enhance sensitivity to human rights.
During this period, events such as ▲human rights education for district and county community leaders (tongjang and ijang) and screening of award-winning films from the Police Agency Human Rights Film Festival (12.8, City Hall auditorium) ▲Busan Human Rights Cultural Festival (12.10, Busan Democracy Park) ▲Busan Human Rights Conference (12.11, Busan Social Welfare Comprehensive Center) ▲human rights book talk with the author of ‘Sanbok Laundry’ (12.15, Busan Eurasia Platform) ▲report on monitoring results of the human rights status of visually impaired women (12.15, City Hall large conference room) ▲exhibition of award-winning works from the Busan Human Rights Center and National Human Rights Commission human rights artwork contest (12.8~12.15, City Hall lobby to urban railway) ▲Busanjin-gu human rights policy discussion (12.7, Jin-gu Office Dabok Room) will be held.
Additionally, through the screening of the film ‘Wonder,’ human rights education for city employees using photographic media, and a human rights campaign during the morning commute at City Hall, the organization culture respecting human rights among public officials will be enhanced. A human rights quiz event will also be conducted via Busan City’s social networking services (SNS) to increase citizen engagement.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “On this Human Rights Day commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we have prepared various human rights cultural events that make human rights easily accessible in daily life.” He added, “Following the successful hosting of this Human Rights Week, we will thoroughly prepare for the National Council of Human Rights Commissions of Metropolitan Local Governments to be held in Busan in 2024, further strengthening our city’s human rights capabilities.”
