Reducing Box and Cushioning Volume, Introducing Paper Bags to Cut 32% Compared to Before
Gradual Application to Own Brands Shipped via SI Village Starting This Month
Shinsegae International announced on the 7th that it plans to reduce the amount of paper packaging materials and accessories used for product delivery by more than one-third starting this month.
The amount of paper saved through packaging reduction is approximately 267 tons. Considering that producing 1 ton of paper requires 17 pine trees aged 30 years, the company explained that this is equivalent to protecting 4,539 pine trees.
Shinsegae International will also introduce 2.5mm thick packaging boxes and paper bags in addition to the previously uniformly used 4mm thick packaging boxes. The paper fillers such as cushioning materials and safety envelopes will be reduced from four types to two types.
The paper tape used on boxes is an eco-friendly certified product using water-based coating and water-based adhesive, allowing easy separation and disposal as paper without the need for removal. The small packaging polybags (plastic packaging bags) used for some clothing items that may get wet from rain or snow will be replaced with polybags made from recycled materials.
This eco-friendly delivery policy will be gradually implemented starting this month for all in-house brand products shipped from Shinsegae International’s own digital platform, SI Village. All paper materials used in delivery are produced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified eco-friendly materials and are 100% recyclable, allowing easy separation and disposal as paper without any special treatment.
A Shinsegae International official stated, “We will continue to fulfill our corporate social responsibility by practicing eco-friendly solutions for a sustainable environment in response to rapidly changing consumer patterns.”
