The results of a study and survey on the ideal spouse image as seen by unmarried men and women in 2023 have been announced.

On the 6th, the marriage information company Duo conducted a survey and research on the marriage perceptions of unmarried men and women aged 25 to 39 and announced the '2023 Ideal Spouse Image.'


The survey results showed that the ideal husband is ▲height 178.7 cm ▲annual income 60.67 million KRW ▲assets 334.91 million KRW ▲2 years older ▲4-year university graduate ▲general office worker male.


For the ideal wife, the characteristics were ▲height 164.2 cm ▲annual income 43.77 million KRW ▲assets 216.92 million KRW ▲2.3 years younger ▲4-year university graduate ▲general office worker female.


The ideal husband's occupations were ▲general office worker (43.6%) ▲public servant/public corporation (30.8%) ▲finance (22.8%) ▲professionals such as accountants, patent attorneys, appraisers, tax accountants (22.4%) ▲engineers/information and communication (22.0%).


The ideal wife's occupations were ▲general office worker (47.2%) ▲public servant/public corporation (39.0%) ▲doctor/pharmacist (22.0%) ▲teacher (17.8%) ▲nurse/medical-related jobs (17.8%) in order.

Regarding the desired spouse's annual income, men most frequently chose 'between 30 million KRW and less than 40 million KRW' (29.4%), while women most frequently chose '70 million KRW or more' (22.6%).


Next, men preferred 'not important' (25.2%) and 'between 40 million KRW and less than 50 million KRW' (19.4%), while women preferred 'between 50 million KRW and less than 60 million KRW' (19.2%) and 'between 40 million KRW and less than 50 million KRW' (18.0%).


The response that the spouse's annual income is 'not important' (men 25.2%, women 15.8%) decreased by 9.6 percentage points for men and 3.6 percentage points for women compared to last year.


The average annual income of the ideal husband was 60.67 million KRW, and that of the ideal wife was 43.77 million KRW. In terms of net income, men earn about 4.26 million KRW per month, and women earn about 3.19 million KRW per month.


The average asset size of the ideal spouse was 334.91 million KRW for husbands and 216.92 million KRW for wives.


Ideal Spouse Education Level: More than Half Prefer '4-Year University Graduate or Higher'

More than half preferred '4-year university graduate or higher' as the ideal spouse's education level (men 56.2%, women 62.2%). The response 'not important' was 35.0% for men and 33.0% for women. Compared to the previous year, this response decreased by 2.4 percentage points for men and increased by 4.2 percentage points for women.


The average height of the ideal spouse was 178.7 cm for men and 164.2 cm for women. Looking in detail, men preferred their wife's height as ▲not important (54.2%) ▲less than 165 cm (22.4%) ▲between 165 cm and less than 170 cm (17.0%) in that order. Women most wanted their husband's height to be ▲between 180 cm and less than 185 cm (34.0%), followed by ▲between 175 cm and less than 180 cm (33.8%) and ▲not important (20.8%).


The top criteria for choosing an ideal spouse (up to 3 selections) for both men and women were 'personality' (men 77.2%, women 73.8%) and 'values' (men 57.4%, women 55.4%). Men then chose ▲appearance (49.6%) ▲hobbies/interests (29.8%) ▲health (20.0%) ▲economic power (17.4%). Women prioritized ▲economic power (42.2%) ▲appearance (36.2%) ▲hobbies/interests (23.6%) ▲family background (23.6%).


Men placed relatively higher importance on 'appearance,' while women placed relatively higher importance on 'economic power' and 'family background.' Compared to last year, men's consideration of 'values' increased by 5.4 percentage points, and women's consideration of 'appearance' increased by 6.2 percentage points, raising their importance.


A Duo representative said, "Marriage is becoming a choice rather than a necessity," adding, "It seems that the standards for the ideal marriage type desired by unmarried men and women in their 20s and 30s are gradually rising."
