Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Holds Symposium Addressing Local Extinction

The National Architecture Policy Committee, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Jeollabuk-do announced on the 6th that they will hold a "Symposium on the Regeneration of Abandoned and Idle Spaces in Response to Regional Extinction" at the Palbok Art Factory in Jeonju on the 7th.

This symposium, under the theme "Regeneration of Abandoned and Idle Spaces in Response to Regional Extinction," will consist of two keynote presentations and a panel discussion, with about 60 experts from the public, private, and academic sectors related to regional extinction response, including researchers and architects, participating.

The keynote presentations will cover two topics: "Spatial Policy in Response to Regional Extinction" and "Public Architecture and Regional Revitalization Using Idle Spaces."

During the discussion, central government agencies, research institutions, and architects will discuss policy directions to respond to regional extinction by categorizing idle spaces such as vacant houses and closed schools in relation to the keynote presentations aimed at preparing countermeasures for regional extinction.

Chairman Kwon Young-geol of the Architecture Policy Committee stated, "Regional extinction has become a significant challenge for our nation and local communities, and one of the solutions is to utilize closed schools and abandoned idle spaces as creative and useful resources," adding, "I hope this event will be a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the realities and challenges of regional extinction and to collaborate in finding effective countermeasures together."
