Why Has Reading Become More Convenient for Jungnang Residents? Reading Assistance Device

Reading is expected to become more convenient in Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi), known as a "city of readers."

The Jungnang-gu Public Myeonmok Information Library (hereinafter Myeonmok Information Library), located in Myeonmokbon-dong, Jungnang-gu, has started providing reading assistance devices for vulnerable readers after being selected for the "2023 Public Library Reading Assistance Device National Subsidy Project."

Organized by the National Library for Persons with Disabilities, the "Public Library Reading Assistance Device Support Project" supports the purchase of reading assistance devices for vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities and middle-aged and elderly people. With this selection, Myeonmok Information Library secured a total project budget of 12 million KRW to purchase, install, and operate reading assistance devices to improve the reading environment and user convenience.

The installed reading assistance devices include six types: desktop reading magnifiers, portable reading magnifiers, optical character readers, screen magnification programs, public-use hearing aids, and special evacuation wheelchairs. These are installed in the 4th-floor General Reference Room and the 5th-floor Electronic Information Room.

Users who need reading assistance devices, such as persons with disabilities, low-vision individuals, and the elderly, can use them free of charge within the reference rooms.

Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "Reading assistance devices will greatly help residents access the vast wisdom and information contained in books," adding, "We will continue to make various efforts to create a city of readers where residents can be closer to books."
