"Spring in Seoul" Viewing Moon Jae-in: "Hope It Becomes a Force to Change Unjust Reality"

Spring in Seoul, 5 Million Visitors in Just 14 Days

"I hope that the anger against the unjust rebel forces and the unjust history becomes the power to change the unjust reality."

This was the comment made by former President Moon Jae-in after watching the movie 'Seoul Spring' on the 5th.

On that day, former President Moon posted on his social media (SNS) Facebook, saying, "It is truly a painful history. Even after many years have passed, the wounds left on our history and society are very large and deep," and "The young members of the bookstore (Pyeongsan Bookstore) who watched the movie with me actually asked if such an event really happened."

He continued, "The more painful the history, the more we must learn, remember, and take it as a lesson," and "I hope that the anger against the unjust rebel forces and the unjust history becomes the power to change the unjust reality."

He then introduced his connection with the late Major Kim Orang’s wife, who died during the 12.12 military coup, from when he was working as a human rights lawyer in Busan.

Former President Moon said, "About ten years after the 12.12 military coup, I met Major Kim Orang’s wife, Baek Young-ok, a couple of times," and "At that time, she was in a state of complete blindness due to tears caused by the extreme sorrow from her husband’s death, and her appearance was extremely pitiful."

He added, "At that time, reporter Lee Soo-yoon, who was a Busan correspondent for the Hankyoreh newspaper, recommended a compensation lawsuit to her and brought her to my office for legal consultation," and "I told her that it was an unprecedented lawsuit, so it was difficult to predict the outcome, but it was the only way to seek truth-finding and restoration of honor on a personal level for the victim."

Former President Moon said, "However, after expressing her intention to sue, she lost contact," and "A little later, I heard from reporter Lee Soo-yoon that she had died from a fall, which was very heartbreaking at the time."

He said, "It is truly tragic that after the promising husband, the wife also met a sad fate at a young age," and "I sincerely hope that the two of them are reunited and happy in the afterlife."

Meanwhile, the movie Seoul Spring surpassed 5 million viewers within 14 days of its release. This is the fastest box office trend since 'The Outlaws 3' in 2023, which was the only movie to surpass 10 million viewers that year. Also, ‘Seoul Spring’ is the only Korean film released in winter since 2020, when the pandemic caused a slump, to surpass 5 million viewers.

Starring Hwang Jung-min and Jung Woo-sung, the movie depicts the tense nine hours to prevent the rebellion of the new military forces that occurred on December 12, 1979, in the capital city of Seoul.
