Fernando Pessoa's 'The Book of Disquiet' in Short Supply

A 10-year-old, 800-page "brick book" (a book as thick and heavy as a brick) published domestically is gaining renewed attention thanks to the recommendation of actress Han So-hee.

According to the publishing industry on the 4th, the essay collection "The Book of Disquiet" by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888?1935) has recently become scarce at some online bookstores. This is because actress Han So-hee mentioned the book, which is also known as "The Book of Anxiety."

In a photo interview released on the 22nd of last month in "Esquire," Han So-hee said, "I have been reading the incredibly thick book 'The Book of Disquiet' for quite a long time," adding, "There is an impressive line in that book: the emotion everyone feels 24 hours a day except when sleeping is anxiety."

She continued, "However, we can forget anxiety through small actions like sleeping, exercising, or doing simple labor," and said, "This anxiety is like very thin paper. So we must diligently clear today's anxiety today and tomorrow's anxiety tomorrow so that this anxiety does not accumulate."

She also said, "Lately, I have been fixated on the question 'What is emotion?'" and added, "The time we are aware of depression or sadness can frighteningly be long. So even if we are okay now after experiencing something, we might not be okay 2 to 3 years later. Therefore, shouldn't we always question our emotions?"

Meanwhile, "The Book of Disquiet" was published in 1982, 47 years after the death of the author Pessoa. The book contains about 480 prose pieces in diary format. These prose pieces, ranging from 2?3 manuscript pages to as long as 20 pages, are set against the backdrop of Doradores Street in Lisbon, Portugal. The book spans 800 pages and was published domestically in 2014.
