Gyeonggi-do Excels in Waste Management Policy This Year... Ranked No.1 Nationwide by Ministry of Environment Evaluation Gyeonggi Provincial Government

Gyeonggi Province ranked first nationwide in the ‘2023 Waste Management Operation Performance Evaluation’ conducted by the Ministry of Environment.

The Waste Management Operation Performance Evaluation is a system in which the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation assess the overall management of household waste in four areas?household waste generation, self-sufficiency rate of household waste management budget, final disposal rate, and recycling rate?across 17 metropolitan local governments nationwide.

Gyeonggi Province scored 92 points in this evaluation, achieving excellent results in all areas. In particular, it received perfect scores in three categories: household waste generation, final disposal rate, and recycling rate.

Gyeonggi Province has actively implemented policy projects in the resource circulation sector, such as waste reduction, prioritizing recycling policies, and timely expansion of waste treatment facilities, striving for a transition to a circular economy in the province.

Since 2019, it has been promoting the Clean Gyeonggi Project (consisting of 36 detailed projects across 5 sectors) to reduce household waste. Additionally, through evaluations aimed at discovering resource circulation policies in cities and counties, advanced waste policies are being actively implemented. Excellent cases discovered by cities and counties are shared and utilized as policies.

Notably, in 2021, Gyeonggi Province became the first in the nation to launch a reusable container project for delivery apps, which is being expanded throughout the entire province. Furthermore, the scope has been broadened to include funeral halls, local festivals, and public facilities to suppress the use of disposable products and increase recycling rates.

Cha Seong-su, Director of the Climate, Environment and Energy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will do our best to significantly reduce household waste through active project implementation in the resource circulation sector and provide residents with a clean and livable environment."
