Impeachment Bill for Prosecutors Passed Amid Yeo's Absence
"Hope It Becomes the First Step to Restore the Prosecution to Its Place"
Min Hyung-bae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 1st that the passage of the impeachment motions against prosecutors Son Jun-sung and Lee Jeong-seop in the National Assembly plenary session is "a first step toward restoring the prosecution to its rightful place."
On the same day, Min said through social media (SNS), "The National Assembly has just passed the impeachment motions against Prosecutor Son Jun-sung and Prosecutor Lee Jeong-seop," adding, "Their duties will be suspended immediately."
He continued, "I hope this marks a precious start to stopping the tyranny of prosecutorial dictatorship."
He also said, "Of course, this is not the end. Impeachment of prosecutors will continue whenever grounds for impeachment arise, as well as in cases where impeachment motions have already been prepared."
On the afternoon of the same day, the National Assembly plenary session passed the impeachment motion against Prosecutor Son with 175 votes in favor, 2 against, 2 invalid, and 1 abstention out of 180 members present, and the impeachment motion against Prosecutor Lee with 174 votes in favor, 3 against, 2 invalid, and 1 abstention out of 180 members present, forwarding the motions to the Constitutional Court. The People Power Party boycotted the plenary session in protest against the Democratic Party's forced passage of the impeachment motions.
As a result, Prosecutor Son Jun-sung, who is currently on trial over the so-called 'whistleblower scandal,' and Deputy Prosecutor General Lee Jeong-seop, who was responsible for investigating cases related to Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, were immediately suspended from their duties.
