Samsung Registers 'AI Phone' Trademark... Global Manufacturers Prepare for Clash

Galaxy S24 AI Integration Expected... Translation Calls & Image Quality Improvement
Google and Chinese Manufacturers Also Target On-Device AI Market

Global major smartphone manufacturers are preparing smartphones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Samsung Electronics is moving quickly to secure market dominance by promoting an 'AI phone' ahead of the Galaxy S24 launch scheduled for January next year.

Overseas IT media GalaxyClub reported that Samsung Electronics registered trademarks for 'AI Smartphone' and 'AI Phone' with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) on the 24th (local time).

Samsung Electronics is known to equip the Galaxy S24 with on-device AI called 'Samsung Gauss.' Key features include real-time translation calls and video/image quality enhancement. On-device AI is a technology that embeds generative AI directly within the device itself. Unlike existing generative AI, it does not connect to external servers or the cloud, allowing information collection and computation within the device, resulting in faster processing speeds and lower risk of information leakage. Another advantage is the ability to provide customized services.

Earlier, during the Q3 earnings conference call, Daniel Araujo, Executive Director of Samsung Electronics MX Division, stated, "We plan to apply AI to core functions used by customers and optimize based on user patterns and preferences to provide more meaningful and innovative experiences starting next year."

Overseas IT media SamMobile commented on the trademark registration, saying, "It is an indicator that AI will be the most highlighted word when the Galaxy S24 series is announced."

Alongside Samsung Electronics, Apple, another major smartphone manufacturer, is also preparing to launch AI-equipped smartphones next year. Foreign media such as Bloomberg reported that Apple is considering providing generative AI in the new iPhone operating system (OS) iOS18. To this end, it is known to be refining its own large language model (LLM).

Google released the smartphone 'Pixel 8' last month, equipped with the mobile application processor (AP) 'Tensor G3.' The AP acts as the brain of the smartphone and was developed in-house with on-device AI in mind. Google introduced the Pixel 8 as the first smartphone made for the generative AI era. It is equipped with 'Google Assistant with Bard,' which applies Google's AI chatbot service Bard.

Chinese manufacturers are also accelerating efforts to secure the on-device AI smartphone market. Xiaomi equipped the Xiaomi 14 series with generative AI, and Vivo unveiled the X100 and X100 Pro smartphones on the 13th, equipped with its own developed LLM 'BlueLM.' They are equipped with MediaTek's Dimensity 9300 chip, which has a built-in generative AI engine. BlueLM is a small-scale LLM with 7 billion parameters, trained on data equivalent to 160 million books, providing functions such as summarizing papers and web pages.

The global smartphone market, which had been stagnant since COVID-19, began to rebound starting last month. Global market research firm Counterpoint Research reported that the worldwide monthly smartphone sales in October increased by 5% compared to the same period last year. This is the first increase since June 2021. The industry expects AI smartphones to ignite the market recovery trend.

Lee Gyu-ha, a researcher at NH Investment & Securities, said, "Recently, global IT companies such as Qualcomm, Microsoft, Meta, and Samsung Electronics have shown great interest in on-device AI and are expanding investments. We expect 2024 to be the inaugural year for on-device AI application," adding, "It is expected to lead the expansion of replacement demand for legacy IT devices."
