On the 25th, Pohang City held the ‘2023 Child Abuse Prevention Day Ceremony and Guest Lecture’ at the Ocheon-eup Community Welfare Center in celebration of World Child Abuse Prevention Day.

This event, organized to promote a desirable child-rearing culture in the local community, was jointly hosted by seven organizations comprising the Pohang City Child Abuse Response Information Linkage Council, including Pohang City, Pohang Office of Education, Pohang Northern Police Station, Pohang Southern Police Station, Pohang Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, Gyeongbuk Eastern Child Protection Agency, and Gyeongbuk Eastern Sunflower Center, along with the Pohang City Childcare Comprehensive Support Center.
With over 250 citizens participating, the event began with awarding commendations to 24 individuals who contributed to the activation of child abuse prevention projects and the discovery, protection, treatment, and support of abused children.
Following this, Professor Lisa Son from the Department of Psychology at Columbia University in the United States delivered a lecture on child-rearing, receiving great acclaim from parents experiencing difficulties in raising their children.
Professor Lisa Son is a distinguished figure who provides wise guidance on communication with children and proper discipline methods through her books such as ‘Metacognitive Learning Method’ and ‘Imposter,’ as well as public lectures and media appearances.
During the lecture, she responded to pre-submitted questions and on-site inquiries related to child-rearing with practical advice and various case examples, gaining empathy from the participants.
Vice Mayor Kim Nam-il emphasized, “A city where children are happy is a city where citizens are happy,” and stated, “We will spare no effort to actively support the spread of a proper child-rearing culture in the local community.”
Pohang City has established a collaborative system among various related organizations in the community centered on the Child Abuse Response Information Linkage Council, promptly responding and taking protective measures when child abuse cases occur. Additionally, the city is promoting various child abuse prevention and awareness activities to expand children’s human rights within the community.
