'Future Opened Together' Photo, Video, and Artifact Reproduction Exhibition
Time for Conversation Between German Ambassador to Korea and Visitors...
An exhibition reflecting on 140 years of history between Korea and Germany will be held at Dondeokjeon in Deoksugung Palace, which the Korean Empire used as a diplomatic space. The special exhibition "Opening the Future Together," organized by the Cultural Heritage Administration's Palace and Royal Tombs Division and the German Embassy in Korea, will take place from the 9th to the 17th of next month to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Korea-Germany diplomatic relations.
The exhibition showcases the history from 1883, when the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation between Korea and Germany was signed, to the present through various photographs, video materials, and reproduced artifacts. It features a reproduction of the armor and helmet that King Gojong (reigned 1863?1907) gifted to Prince Heinrich of Prussia (1862?1929) of the German Empire in 1899, as well as photographs depicting German teachers conducting classes at the first government-run German language school, the Gwanrip Deokeo School.
Visitors can also see photos and videos of various events held in both countries this year. On the opening day, the 9th of next month, Georg Wilfried Schmidt, the German Ambassador to Korea, will visit the archive room on the second floor of Dondeokjeon to engage with visitors. A representative from the Deoksugung Management Office said, "We hope this will be an opportunity to vividly experience the long diplomatic history between Korea and Germany."
Dondeokjeon is a two-story Western-style building located behind Seokjojeon Hall in Deoksugung Palace. It was built as a commemorative venue celebrating King Gojong’s 40th anniversary of accession and was mainly used as a space for diplomatic exchanges and a guesthouse. It fell into disuse in the 1920s, was demolished during the Japanese colonial period, and has recently been reconstructed after about 100 years.
