On the 24th, Ssangyong C&E announced that it was selected as the number one company in the cement industry in the ‘2023 Korea Sustainability Index (KSI)’ announced by the Korea Standards Association ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Management Promotion Team.

It is the first company in the cement industry to win first place in KSI for 10 consecutive years and the first in the construction-related industry to be inducted into the ‘KSI Hall of Fame.’

Introduced in 2009, the KSI is an index that evaluates sustainability based on the seven core subjects of the international standard for corporate social responsibility, ‘ISO 26000,’ and 40 sub-issues under each subject. This year’s survey involved stakeholders from 50 industries and 214 companies and institutions, with a total of about 28,000 samples participating.

The seven core subjects of ISO 26000 are organizational governance, human rights, labor practices, environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development. These serve as the highest guidelines for the implementation of ESG management by companies and institutions.

Ssangyong C&E received consistently high evaluations in areas such as ‘sustainable use of resources,’ ‘compliance with and promotion of fair competition practices,’ ‘enhancement of transparency in management activities,’ ‘reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change,’ ‘strengthening accountability of management decision-makers,’ ‘prevention of biodiversity and natural ecosystem damage and restoration of natural habitats,’ ‘ensuring health and safety in labor,’ and ‘prevention of air and water pollution and management of waste emissions.’

A Ssangyong C&E official explained, “It is analyzed that the ESG management system, which has been continuously operated through a market-based autonomous competition system and expanded compliance and ethical management, has come on track and led to positive results.”

Hyun-Jun Lee, President of Ssangyong C&E, said, “We will continue to focus all our capabilities on practicing ESG management to turn future environmental changes and crisis situations into opportunities for corporate development. We will not be satisfied with the title of being the first in the cement industry to win first place in KSI for 10 consecutive years. We will also actively expand investments in environmental improvements, including the development of new products such as blended cement, take the lead in realizing carbon neutrality, and ultimately strive to become a sustainable company.”
