Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee Receives 3rd Korea Senior Citizens Association Senior Welfare Award

Dongdaemun District Mayor Ilhyung Lee was honored on the 23rd by receiving the 'Grand Prize' in the Basic Local Government Head category at the '3rd Korea Senior Citizens Association Senior Welfare Awards' hosted by the Korea Senior Citizens Association.

The Korea Senior Citizens Association Senior Welfare Awards are given to metropolitan and basic local government heads nationwide who have contributed to the improvement of senior welfare with the spirit of filial piety. This award ceremony was held that day at SETEC in Seoul.

Dongdaemun District was recognized for its contributions to enhancing senior welfare, including increased support for heating and cooling costs at senior centers, facility repairs for senior centers and the Dongdaemun District branch building, and support for balanced meal provision through senior center grocery expenses.

In particular, five senior centers in the area have been designated as Smart Senior Centers, supporting leisure and emotional activities using smart touch tables and assisting health management with smart walking aids.

Additionally, to bridge the digital divide, education on smartphones and kiosks is provided to help senior citizens at the centers adapt well to the rapidly changing digital environment.

Furthermore, with the planned opening of the district-run Senior Comprehensive Welfare Center in November next year, there are active plans to respond to the increasing demand for senior welfare services in the aging era.

Mayor Ilhyung Lee of Dongdaemun District said, “I consider this award as a call to pay more attention to improving senior welfare and to do my best. Going forward, we will continue to discover and implement customized welfare policies so that seniors can spend a comfortable and vibrant old age in preparation for the increasingly aging society.”
