Damyang-gun Selects 'Hoeryong Village Herbal Medicine Book' as Grand Prize Winner of 2nd Private Records Collection Contest

The grand prize-winning 'Hoeryong Village Village Regulations' is a village charter written in 1816, providing valuable insight into how village communities were managed in the 1800s.

In particular, it was highly evaluated for its historical value as it continuously managed the residents' histories by recording the names and pen names of villagers until 2005.

Also, the excellence award went to a diary submitted by Han Heung-taek from Daejeon-myeon.

This diary was recorded by the donor's father for over 20 years from 1983 until his death in 2001, containing records of family events and agricultural information, making it a valuable resource for life history.

Other merit award winners included a photo of a boy crossing the stone bridge in Sanseong-ri, which disappeared due to the construction of Damyang Lake, a wedding dowry of nine-year-old cotton cloth made by a mother, and a wedding horoscope written for the groom.

Judge Kang Kyung-won said, “The Hoeryong Village Village Regulations, selected as the grand prize, have been preserved by the villagers united for over 200 years, and even now, residents pray briefly for the village’s well-being under the Dangsan tree during the lunar New Year.” He added, “Damyang-gun also wants to carefully preserve the collected records and pass on the virtues contained in the records as a legacy to future generations.”

The records selected in the contest will be digitized and preserved as Damyang’s heritage.
