Hunet Holds 20th Anniversary Meeting on Happy Management
Cho Young-tak, CEO of Hunet, is introducing happy management at the 20th anniversary press conference of 'Happy Management' held on the 21st at the Glad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul.
"After implementing a four-day workweek, our hiring competition rate tripled within a year, and sales increased by 20%."
On the 21st, Cho Young-tak, CEO of Hunet, said this at the 20th anniversary meeting of ‘Happy Management’ held at the Glad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul. Hunet has been implementing a four-day workweek with Fridays off since July last year. Hunet adheres to the ‘100:80:100’ work model, which means maintaining the same monthly salary (100%), working only four days a week (80%), while keeping productivity at the original level (100%).
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Hunet’s operation of ‘Happy Management.’ Happy Management is a management philosophy that prioritizes maximizing the happiness of stakeholders such as employees, customers, society, and shareholders, rather than maximizing profits. On this day, CEO Cho introduced experimental cases of Happy Management applied at Hunet and examples of spreading Happy Management through the ‘Happy Management University,’ a leadership training program for CEOs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Cho reflected, "After starting the company, I studied management anew and created Happy Management in 2003. It has been 20 years since I began sending the daily ‘Happy Management Story’ newsletter to share the excellent knowledge I encountered while studying Happy Management with those around me."
Hunet concretizes Happy Management in various ways. It created ‘Magic+,’ which defines employee happiness in seven categories, and measures and improves employee happiness scores through an annual survey of 100 items. Representative initiatives include employee pension plans, sabbaticals, reading management, employee learning platforms, flexible working hours, and the four-day workweek. Since its founding, Hunet has set new sales records every year. The average sales growth rate over the past three years is 22%, demonstrating the performance of Happy Management in tangible results.
Since 2016, Hunet has been operating the Happy Management University free of charge to spread Happy Management to other companies. So far, 650 company CEOs have completed the training program and introduced Happy Management to their companies. Alumni companies have seen an average annual sales growth rate of 11% and a 6% increase in the number of employees, contributing to job creation. Several publicly listed companies have also emerged. Lee Jin-su, CEO of cosmetics company CMS Lab, who presented a case study of an excellent Happy Management company, said, "We are proving the hypothesis that ‘if employees are happy, the business will do well’ through results," adding, "Our company’s sales have been growing by more than 30% annually." Kwon In-taek, CEO of the recruitment platform OpenNol, said, "The best welfare a CEO can provide is to help employees grow and create a company where they want to stay long-term," and added, "If employees find their personal value and happiness at the company, I firmly believe the company will definitely grow."
The Happy Management newsletter has 2.2 million subscribers. Over 20 years, it has published 4,775 issues featuring quotes extracted from more than 3,500 books. This month, it published a book titled ‘Choncheolhwarin’ (a total of 12 volumes), which compiles the writings so far.
