Tears Flowing from the Statue of the Virgin Mary...An Unusual Phenomenon in Colima, Mexico, Known as the 'Worst Violent City'

Residents "Tears Flowing, Frostbitten Eyes Also Turned Red"

Recently, a statue of the Virgin Mary shedding tears was captured at a church in Mexico, drawing widespread attention.

According to US broadcaster Fox News and others on the 18th (local time), since last month, a statue of the Virgin Mary at a church in Colima, Mexico, began shedding tears, attracting numerous onlookers.

Videos posted on social media show droplets resembling tears flowing from the eyes of the Virgin Mary statue, which is looking upward with hands clasped. Although this phenomenon started last month, it gained more attention after related videos were posted on social media in mid-month.

A local resident who saw this said, "As the tears flowed, the statue's eyes also turned red," and claimed, "The same phenomenon of crying and reddening eyes that we experience is now happening to the Virgin Mary statue."

They also said, "The statue's tears represent her (the Virgin Mary) trying to bring peace to a community filled with violence." In other words, it is claimed that the reason the Virgin Mary statue is shedding tears is related to the ongoing violence in Colima.

In fact, Colima, where the statue is located, is considered a serious high-crime area. The US Department of State currently warns against traveling to Colima due to concerns over exposure to various crimes such as kidnapping. Additionally, Colima, the capital city of Colima state, recorded a high murder rate of 181.94 per 100,000 residents in 2022, earning it the title of "the most violent city in the world."

Regarding this phenomenon, Professor Luigi Garlaschelli, who studies supernatural phenomena, analyzed, "Most statues are made of plaster or ceramic and are hollow inside. Depending on the material, they have the ability to absorb water, so if there are slight cracks in the structure, water can seep in."

Also, Father Paul Hedman of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis warned, "We should not get excited until the investigation is complete," adding, "A crying statue could be the result of blatant scams by people trying to make money." He further advised, "I encourage people to be skeptical. The truth will be revealed, and it is better to be cautious than to give attention to things proven not to be true."

Meanwhile, this is not the first time a strange phenomenon has occurred with a statue. Previously, in 1995, a statue of the Hindu god Ganesha in India was reported to appear as if it was drinking milk, which also became a topic of interest. This phenomenon is said to be caused by 'capillary action,' where liquid moves through small tubes.
