Japanese figure skating superstar Hanyu Yuzuru (28) has abruptly announced his divorce just three months after getting married.
In the early hours of the 18th, Hanyu revealed on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), "My ex-wife was unable to step outside the house due to excessive attention from those around her," adding, "There were even suspicious vehicles and individuals loitering near our home." He continued, "As a result, our married life faced difficulties, and we ultimately decided to divorce," appealing, "From now on, please refrain from slandering or engaging in indiscriminate reporting activities towards my ex-wife, family, and related parties."
Japanese media and foreign news outlets unanimously reported on Hanyu's divorce news.
Japan's Sankei Sports pointed out, "Many media outlets crossed the line in their reporting activities to uncover personal information and lifestyle details about Hanyu's spouse," noting, "Especially recently, the spouse's identity was even revealed." This suggests that excessive media competition was a factor leading to the divorce.
The official Olympic website also cited Hanyu's post on social media, announcing, "Olympic champion Hanyu has announced his divorce."
Hanyu is a Japanese figure skating superstar who won gold medals in the men's singles at both the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. He also achieved a Grand Slam by sweeping the International Skating Union (ISU) World Championships, ISU Grand Prix Final, and ISU Four Continents Championships.
Due to these achievements, Hanyu earned the reputation as the greatest male figure skater in Japanese history. His story of overcoming adversity to win Olympic gold medals has even been included in Japanese elementary and middle school textbooks.

In July last year, Hanyu effectively announced his retirement by stating he would no longer participate in the Olympics or other general competitions and would focus on ice shows as a professional skater. At that time, Hanyu said, "I have registered my marriage," but did not disclose any details about his spouse’s name, age, or occupation. Moreover, there had been no prior rumors of a relationship. The sudden marriage announcement shocked many.
