Mira Murati Appointed Interim CIO
The OpenAI board, which developed ChatGPT, abruptly dismissed CEO Sam Altman on the 17th (local time).
On the 17th, the board announced the dismissal through an official blog, stating that "communication with Altman was inconsistent and not candid." Altman, who led the founding of OpenAI and emerged as a leading figure in the global AI industry with the launch of ChatGPT last year, known as the "father of ChatGPT," was ousted from the company.
His position is temporarily filled by Mira Murati, the current Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Born in Albania, Murati is 35 years old this year. The board's stance is to find a permanent successor gradually after temporarily filling the vacancy.
Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but at that time OpenAI was a nonprofit organization. Later, in 2019, a for-profit corporation was established, receiving investment from Microsoft (MS). It is a well-known anecdote that Altman did not take even a single share in the for-profit corporation during this process.
Greg Brockman, the chairman of the board who co-founded OpenAI with Altman, is also expected to step down from his chairman position.
Altman wrote on his X account, "I really enjoyed my time at OpenAI," adding, "It was a chance to personally and globally make some change, and above all, I was glad to work with talented people." He also stated, "I will talk more about my next plans later."
Born into a Jewish family in the United States and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Altman dropped out of Stanford's computer science program and co-founded the location-based social networking service company Loopt in 2005 when he was 19 years old. In 2014, he served as the president of Y Combinator, the largest startup accelerator in the United States.
