Yoon Holds Series of Summits in San Francisco...Condemns North Korea-Russia Arms Deal

Yoon Holds First Peru and Chile Summit Since Inauguration
Discusses Supply Chain Cooperation and Expo Hosting

President Yoon Suk-yeol held a series of summit meetings with Peru, Japan, Chile, and Vietnam on the 16th (local time) in San Francisco, USA, where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit is taking place, discussing cooperation measures against the illegal military collaboration between North Korea and Russia. He also requested support for supply chain cooperation, revitalization of human exchanges, and the bid for the 2030 World Expo.

Kim Tae-hyo, the first deputy director of the National Security Office, said at a local press room briefing that "President Yoon emphasized that the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea poses a threat to global security and discussed cooperation measures against illegal collaboration that undermines the normative order."

Kim added, "The content of cooperation varies with each country he met, and how each country should cooperate to limit and prevent illegal activities is a security issue," without specifying the details of the talks, but explained that "most parties are in agreement."

In a written interview with the Associated Press released on the 14th, President Yoon stated, "The military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, which is prohibited by the UN Security Council resolutions, seriously threatens security not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in Northeast Asia and Europe, and undermines the universal norm-based international order." He said he would use the opportunity of attending this APEC summit to request international cooperation.

At the first summit meeting of the day, the Korea-Peru summit, President Yoon agreed with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte to strengthen cooperation in various fields such as defense industry, supply chains, development cooperation, and infrastructure. Since Peru is the APEC chair in 2024 and Korea in 2025, they also agreed to cooperate on related issues. At this meeting, President Yoon requested support for hosting the Busan Expo, and expressed gratitude for Peru's supportive stance.

He then held his first summit meeting since taking office with Chilean President Gabriel Boric, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in defense and defense industry, critical minerals, trade and investment, infrastructure, Antarctic base operations, and joint research. The two countries, marking the 20th anniversary of the Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), agreed to expand cooperation on global issues.

Before the start of 'Session 1' of the APEC summit, President Yoon held a roughly 15-minute dialogue with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong, exploring government and corporate exchanges and expanding support for youth exchange activation. President Thuong said, "Since the state visit, there has been a great response from the Vietnamese people, and interest and enthusiasm for the Korean language and Korea have increased," and also conveyed his wishes for Korea's successful bid for the Busan Expo.
