Yoon: "Changing R&D Policies for Innovation Research of Future Generations"

Meeting with Korean Researchers in Silicon Valley at 'Dialogue with Future Korean American Generations'
President Yoon Mentions Government R&D Budget Supplement Process... "Support Regardless of Nationality"

President Yoon Suk-yeol met with Korean researchers in Silicon Valley on the 15th (local time) and stated, "The government is in the process of changing R&D (Research and Development) policies so that future-generation researchers can take on innovative research aiming to be the best in the world without fear of failure." This referred to the process of supplementing next year's R&D budget, which had been cut in the government proposal. President Yoon promised, "We will support Korean future-generation researchers active around the world, including in San Francisco, to grow into world-class researchers regardless of nationality."

President Yoon made these remarks while attending a 'Dialogue with Korean-American Future Generations' held at a hotel in San Francisco that afternoon.

In particular, President Yoon emphasized, "We are greatly expanding global research collaboration opportunities with the world's top researchers, and the restrictions that previously prevented overseas researchers from participating in the South Korean government's R&D are now being removed." He recalled meeting young scientists and technologists during his tours in June to Paris, France, Hanoi, Vietnam, and in September to Jakarta, Indonesia, promising to support innovation and challenges, explaining that the changes in R&D policy are to realize these promises.

He also said, "We will actively support our startups so they can challenge themselves and freely pursue their dreams on a broader stage." According to President Yoon, 37.6% of our startups that have expanded overseas are heading to North America, and about half of those are located in Silicon Valley.

He also promised to build a government portal that consolidates information from 13 local support centers for Korean companies and provide customized services for individual companies. President Yoon said, "You are the main actors who will create a bright future for South Korea and the world, and the driving force of innovation," adding, "I strongly support and cheer for your challenges."

Meanwhile, about 100 people, including entrepreneurs, researchers, and students in the fields of science, technology, and digital industries active nearby, attended the event. The Presidential Office announced, "Based on the opinions gathered at today's event, the government plans to expand international joint research and personnel exchange programs that Korean-Americans can participate in and strengthen support systems for Silicon Valley digital companies."
