Discussion on Biodiversity Conservation and Research Cooperation with Officials Invited from Three Countries
The National Institute of Biological Resources in the Honam Region (Director Ryu Tae-cheol, hereinafter referred to as the Institute), under the Ministry of Environment, announced on the 16th that it will jointly hold an "International Workshop on Island Biological Resource Conservation and Utilization" with the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute by inviting government officials from three countries rich in island biological resources: Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand, on the 17th.
The two-day workshop, held from the 17th to the 18th, was planned to discuss mutual research cooperation measures for the conservation of island ecosystems in each country, as island biodiversity continues to decline due to urbanization, industrialization, and the climate crisis.
On the first day of the workshop, the 17th, 19 participants including government officials from the three countries (MGLEP course), and officials from the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute and the Institute attended to share know-how on the conservation, management, and utilization of island biological resources in each country, and to exchange opinions on joint investigation and discovery of island biological resources and ODA project planning.
On the 18th, plans include discussing cooperation measures for the "International Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project" to achieve carbon neutrality and touring the Mongtan Water Purification Plant in Mokpo City, where solar power generation facilities are installed.
Yoo Kang-yeol, Head of the Island Biological Research Division at the National Institute of Biological Resources in the Honam Region, said, "We hope this workshop will serve as a cornerstone for cooperation and exchange with biological resource-rich countries in the field of island biological resource conservation and utilization research."
