Announcement of Paid Broadcasting Subscribers and Market Share for the First Half of the Year
KT Holds 1st Place with 35.89% Market Share
The growth of paid broadcasting continues to stagnate due to the popularity of online video services (OTT) such as Netflix. A growth rate in the 0% range was recorded following the second half of last year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the number of paid broadcasting subscribers and market share for the first half of 2023.
The number of paid broadcasting subscribers in the first half of 2023 was 36,347,495, an increase of 99,000 subscribers compared to the second half of last year. The subscriber growth rate compared to the previous half was 0.27%, remaining below 1% consecutively since the second half of last year (0.67%). The increase in the number of subscribers also dropped significantly to less than 100,000, compared to the 240,000 increase in the second half of last year.
The number of subscribers by operator (market share) was ▲KT with 8,865,968 subscribers (24.39%) ▲SK Broadband (IPTV) with 6,585,274 subscribers (18.12%) ▲LG Uplus with 5,363,160 subscribers (14.76%) ▲LG HelloVision with 3,659,687 subscribers (10.07%) ▲KT Skylife with 2,901,812 subscribers (7.98%) ▲SK Broadband (SO) with 2,812,541 subscribers (7.74%), in that order.
The number of subscribers by affiliate among the three IPTV companies was KT affiliates (KT + KT Skylife + HCN) with 13.04 million subscribers (35.89%), SK Broadband (IPTV + SO) with 9.4 million subscribers (25.86%), and LG affiliates (LG Uplus + LG HelloVision) with 9.02 million subscribers (24.83%).
By medium, IPTV had 20,814,402 subscribers (57.27%), SO had a total of 12,631,281 subscribers (34.75%), and satellite broadcasting had 2,901,812 subscribers (7.98%). IPTV subscribers increased by 1.21% compared to the second half of last year, but the growth slowed. SO and satellite broadcasting subscribers decreased by 0.77% and 1.74%, respectively. IPTV market share increased by 0.53 percentage points compared to the second half of last year, while SO decreased by 0.36 percentage points and satellite broadcasting by 0.16 percentage points.
By subscriber type, multiple subscribers (cases where multiple terminal devices are installed in hospitals, hotels, stores, etc.) accounted for 17,108,572 (47.07%), individual subscribers 16,483,522 (45.35%), and group subscribers (group contract subscribers signed under the name of resident representative meetings or authorized management entities) 2,755,401 (7.58%), in that order.
The total number of subscribers, including users of free broadcasting services excluded from viewing share calculations and users in islands and mountainous areas, was counted as 36,987,647.
The total number of subscribers by operator was ▲KT with 8,905,323 subscribers ▲SK Broadband (IPTV) with 6,634,274 subscribers ▲LG Uplus with 5,376,228 subscribers ▲LG HelloVision with 3,912,843 subscribers ▲KT Skylife with 3,077,089 subscribers ▲SK Broadband (SO) with 2,873,749 subscribers, in that order.
