The biological parents who deliberately killed their 5-day-old son were each sentenced to 8 years in prison in the first trial, but the prosecution appealed against the decision.
The Tongyeong Branch of Changwon District Prosecutors' Office in Gyeongnam announced on the 14th that the biological father in his 20s, Mr. A, and the biological mother in her 30s, Ms. B, should receive harsher sentences.
The prosecution explained the reason for the appeal, stating, "They planned the crime deliberately before the birth and showed no remorse by living their daily lives and taking photos at their residence after the crime."
Previously, the prosecution requested the court to sentence the two to 15 years in prison each, 5 years of probation, and 10 years of electronic monitoring.
According to the prosecution, Mr. A, who was in a common-law relationship, and others are suspects in the so-called 'Geoje Infant Murder and Abandonment Case.' They gave birth to baby C at a maternity hospital in Geoje on September 5 last year, were discharged four days later, and are accused of killing the child at their residence.
The body of baby C was stored in a refrigerator immediately after the murder and then discarded in a nearby stream early the next morning.
At the time of arrest, they claimed, "We came back to the residence, slept, and woke up to find the child dead," and said they buried the body in a nearby mountain, but during further investigation, they confessed to the crime.
They testified that they committed the crime due to financial difficulties and fear that their respective parents would find out about the birth, which would lead to their separation.
They also admitted that they planned and executed the crime three months before the birth by searching infant murder cases on the internet and scouting locations to abandon the body.
The police searched the site where the couple confessed to abandoning the body for several days, but baby C's body was never found.
