U.S. President Joe Biden expressed the position that medical facilities in the Gaza Strip, which have been targeted by Israeli airstrikes, must be protected.
On the 13th (local time), President Biden responded at the White House to a question about whether he had expressed concerns to Israel regarding hospitals in the Gaza Strip, saying, "I hope and expect less disruptive actions concerning hospitals, and we are maintaining communication with Israel."
He added, "Efforts are underway to halt hostilities for the release of prisoners (hostages) being negotiated, and that is also being discussed," and said, "So I am somewhat hopeful, but hospitals must be protected." He continued, "I have never hesitated to express my concerns about the ongoing situation."
President Biden's remarks on this day are interpreted to mean that the U.S. government has also urged Israel to refrain from airstrikes on hospitals. As the Israeli military has bombed major hospitals, including Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in the Gaza Strip, resulting in numerous patient deaths and disruptions to hospital operations, voices in the international community are growing louder, calling for Israel to stop airstrikes targeting civilians.
