Supply to Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo
SK Hynix announced on the 13th that it has started supplying the world's fastest mobile DRAM LPDDR5T 16-gigabyte (GB) package to Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo. Vivo also announced on the same day that it will launch its latest flagship smartphones, the ‘X100’ and ‘X100 Pro’, equipped with SK Hynix’s latest memory package.
The Vivo smartphones are equipped with LPDDR5T along with the top-tier mobile application processor (AP, a semiconductor that acts as the brain of a smartphone) from Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek, the 'Dimensity 9300'. SK Hynix announced in August that it had successfully completed performance verification for applying LPDDR5T to MediaTek’s mobile AP.
SK Hynix succeeded in developing LPDDR5T last January. Since then, it has been preparing for product commercialization by conducting performance verification with global mobile AP companies.
LPDDR is a DRAM standard used in mobile products such as smartphones and tablets. LPDDR5T is a version first developed by SK Hynix that upgrades the performance of the 7th generation LPDDR5X before the official industry launch of the 8th generation LPDDR6. It can transfer data at 9.6 gigabits (Gb) per second.
SK Hynix stated, "LPDDR5T, which achieves the highest speed ever, is the optimal memory to maximize smartphone performance," adding, "We will lead the generational shift of mobile DRAM while expanding the application range of this product."
The LPDDR5T 16GB package operates within the minimum voltage range of 1.01 to 1.12 volts (V) set by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). The package data processing speed is 77GB per second, which is equivalent to processing 15 Full-HD movies in one second.
SK Hynix plans to lead the generational shift of mobile DRAM while expanding the application range of LPDDR5T products.
Park Myung-su, Vice President in charge of DRAM Marketing at SK Hynix, said, "As the era of artificial intelligence (AI) begins in earnest, smartphones are emerging as essential devices where on-device AI technology is implemented," adding, "Accordingly, demand for high-performance, high-capacity mobile DRAM is increasing in the mobile market."
On-device AI is a technology that implements AI functions within the device itself without relying on computations from physically distant servers. Since smart devices collect and process information independently, the response speed of AI functions is faster, and user-customized AI service functions are enhanced.
Vice President Park emphasized, "While meeting market demand well, we will continue to lead the premium DRAM market based on the technological leadership secured in AI memory."
