On the 13th, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it will hold the '2023 Gwangju Buk-gu Mayor's Cup National eSports Tournament' at Hall 5 of the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall on the 2nd of next month.
The Gwangju Buk-gu Mayor's Cup National eSports Tournament is the first nationwide amateur eSports competition held in Buk-gu. It was organized to foster a healthy gaming culture, promote the activation of eSports culture, and encourage the development of the local gaming industry.
This tournament will feature two events: ▲League of Legends (5:5 team match) and ▲FC Online (1:1 individual match). After online and offline qualifiers on the 25th, the semifinalists will be selected, and the semifinals and finals will be held on the 2nd of next month at Hall 5 of the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall to determine the strongest amateur players nationwide.
The total prize money is 4 million KRW, with 3 million KRW for League of Legends and 1 million KRW for FC Online, awarded to the top three teams and individuals in each category.
Additionally, on the day of the finals, there will be an on-site mobile game (KartRider) tournament where spectators can participate and win prizes, as well as a game character food deco contest. Moreover, promotional booths will be operated where visitors can experience various games developed by local VR and indie game companies and university clubs.
Anyone aged 12 or older interested in gaming can participate in this tournament. Applications are open until the 22nd, and those wishing to participate can apply through the VSS.GG platform or by scanning the QR code on the tournament web poster.
Moon In, the mayor of Buk-gu, said, "This tournament was prepared to provide residents with a vivid opportunity to witness the development of eSports, which is growing at an astonishing speed alongside advanced technological innovation." He added, "Since eSports was selected as an official event at the Hangzhou Asian Games held last September and is increasingly recognized as another sport, we will continue to seek cooperation plans with related organizations to expand the local gaming industry base."
