Gyeonggi Province will promote the use of reusable containers for delivery food brought into government offices starting from the 13th. This decision to use reusable containers for delivery food effectively means the phasing out of single-use containers within the government offices.
Accordingly, public officials working at the Gwanggyo Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office must request reusable container packaging from restaurants when ordering delivery food and return the containers to collection bins installed inside the office after their meals.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with Suwon City, which has been running a support program for the use of reusable containers targeting restaurants in the Gwanggyo and Ingye areas since last September.
Earlier, in December last year, Gyeonggi Province declared a ‘Single-Use Plastic Zero’ initiative and has been implementing policies to reduce single-use items, such as banning single-use cups inside government offices and jointly declaring single-use plastic zero with 31 cities and counties under the province.
Gyeonggi Province plans to fully implement the use of reusable containers for food delivered to government offices starting January next year, after improving issues arising in the field, such as difficulties faced by small business owners, through a pilot operation until the end of this year.
Cha Seong-su, Director of the Climate, Environment and Energy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "To establish a foundation for achieving carbon neutrality, Gyeonggi Province will continuously discover and take the lead in implementing policies to reduce the use of single-use products."
Meanwhile, according to a public opinion survey conducted by Gyeonggi Province in May regarding ‘Climate Policy and RE100,’ 84.1% of respondents answered that the campaign to reduce single-use products by Gyeonggi Province and its affiliated public institutions would ‘help spread a lifestyle culture without single-use products.’
