Gyeonggi Office of Education Allocates 1.4463 Trillion Won for New and Expanded Schools Next Year

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has allocated 1.4463 trillion KRW for new school construction next year. Despite a decrease of 340.6 billion KRW in the main budget for next year, this is the largest amount ever, increasing by 513 billion KRW compared to the previous year.

On the 9th, the Office of Education announced that it submitted to the Gyeonggi Provincial Council a budget of 1.4463 trillion KRW, which is 6.5% of next year’s main budget, for new school construction projects. The detailed breakdown includes ▲ 43.1 billion KRW for establishing 7 new kindergartens ▲ 1.3392 trillion KRW for establishing 99 new schools ▲ 64 billion KRW for expanding 103 classes.

Since the inauguration of Superintendent Lim Tae-hee, the Office of Education has made efforts to improve the investment review system to secure student placement facilities at the right time, such as promoting the construction of 37 new schools with a 100% pass rate in the central investment review for new schools.

As a result, the number of new schools subject to budget allocation increased by 32 compared to the previous year. Additionally, 1.4463 trillion KRW, an increase of 513 billion KRW from the previous year, was included in next year’s main budget.

In particular, this main budget also includes an additional 407.8 billion KRW for new construction projects aimed at resolving oversized and overcrowded classes, beyond the new construction for student placement due to development projects.

Han Geun-su, Head of the School Establishment Planning Division at the Office of Education, stated, "Despite the decrease in the 2024 main budget, the increase of 513 billion KRW in the new school construction budget compared to the previous year reflects the Office of Education’s strong commitment to resolving overcrowded classes. We will do our best to ensure that all students can learn under optimal conditions."
