Ulsan Office of Education's 'Rewriting Our Language' Records Highest Number of Participants Ever

Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education recorded the highest number of participants ever, with 1,585 middle and high school students from the region applying for the ‘Rewriting Our Language (2nd round)’ contest held from October 6 to 24.

The students who participated in the rewriting contest proposed alternative Korean terms for given words, such as changing local food to ‘Tobagi Meokgeori’ (native food), topping to ‘Ollim Jomiryo’ (added seasoning), blue light filter to ‘Nun Anshim Hwamyun’ (eye-safe screen), and kiosk to ‘Seuseuro Gyesandae’ (self-checkout counter).

After evaluation, the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education awarded 55 students with top prizes: 10 received the Excellence Award, 15 the Merit Award, and 30 the Encouragement Award.

Since 2021, the Office of Education has been promoting the ‘Rewriting Our Language’ project, which aims to replace indiscriminately used foreign words, loanwords, and obscure trendy expressions in daily life with easy and beautiful Korean words.

Ulsan Office of Education plans to continue promoting the Korean words selected through student participation, encouraging students to use beautiful Korean in their daily lives.

It also plans to actively encourage the use of easy and beautiful Korean words instead of foreign or loanwords in official documents and policy names by setting an example.

A representative from the Secondary Education Department said, “Many students participated in this event, reflecting on expressions they had used carelessly and realizing the value of our language, which became an opportunity to use correct Korean. We will help students practice proper language use and awaken the spirit of love for our language.”

Ulsan Office of Education was selected as the best institution for the Korean Language Officer duties for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2022.
