Eco-friendly Hydrogen Infrastructure Construction Agreement
Installation of Liquefied Hydrogen Chargers at New Gongyeong Garage
SK E&S will establish liquefied hydrogen refueling infrastructure in Cheonan City.
On the 9th, SK E&S announced that it signed a business agreement with Cheonan City at Cheonan City Hall in Chungnam for the "Establishment of Eco-friendly Hydrogen Infrastructure for Creating a Green City in Cheonan."
Cheonan City plans to introduce 350 hydrogen buses, including city buses and charter buses, by 2027, and will work with SK E&S to build refueling infrastructure to ensure stable hydrogen bus operations.
Starting at the end of this year, SK E&S will produce up to 30,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen annually at the Incheon liquefied hydrogen plant and supply it as fuel for hydrogen buses. To expand hydrogen refueling infrastructure, SK E&S will also promote the construction and operation of liquefied hydrogen refueling stations centered around public bus garages in Cheonan City.
Cheonan City will cooperate in site permits and lease provision to enable SK E&S to build liquefied hydrogen refueling infrastructure in a timely manner and will actively support various initiatives to expand the adoption of hydrogen buses.
SK E&S is accelerating the establishment of a nationwide hydrogen ecosystem by signing business agreements to expand hydrogen bus adoption with Busan City (1,000 buses by 2025), Incheon City (2,000 buses by 2030), Seoul City (1,300 buses by 2026), Gangwon Province and Wonju City (100 buses by 2026), and Goyang City (300 buses by 2027).
Among the city buses and charter buses operating in Cheonan City, charter buses mainly used as corporate commuter buses are diesel buses that emit 30 times more greenhouse gases and over 43 times more fine dust compared to regular passenger cars. Transitioning to eco-friendly vehicles such as hydrogen buses is essential. Hydrogen buses have shorter refueling times than electric buses and can travel over approximately 600 km on a single charge, making them suitable for city buses operating on fixed routes and charter buses used for long-distance routes.
Park Sang-don, Mayor of Cheonan City, said, "To respond organically to the government's eco-friendly policies, we will gradually convert city buses to hydrogen and electric buses and actively strive to create an eco-friendly green city, Cheonan."
Soyuseop, Vice President of SK E&S, said, "Through this agreement, we will cooperate to help Cheonan City successfully establish an eco-friendly green city based on a hydrogen public transportation system," adding, "We will also strive to further expand the adoption of hydrogen commercial vehicles, including hydrogen buses in the Chungcheongnam-do region, to practice carbon neutrality."
