On the 7th, major platform companies including Coupang, Danggeun, Woowa Brothers, Kakao, and Naver introduced various win-win projects they have implemented or are pursuing at the 'Meeting for Expanding Platform Win-Win Cooperation' held at Centerpoint Gwanghwamun in Seoul, chaired by Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT.
The Ministry of Science and ICT organized this meeting to listen to the progress, difficulties, and policy suggestions regarding the voluntary regulation efforts of major companies as part of the government-led 'private sector-driven platform self-regulation' initiative.
First, Yang Joo-il, head of KakaoTalk division at Kakao, explained, "We have implemented policies to freeze or reduce commissions for small and medium-sized merchants, and shortened the settlement cycle for gift transactions." Kakao is also promoting features such as 'Talk Siren' to prevent impersonation damage and alternative text for emoticons for the visually impaired.
He added that they are also striving to apply safe AI and technology. Yang said, "We have established a voluntary AI checklist and will gather opinions on commission revisions through meetings with the taxi industry to improve services overall."
Naver will introduce the 'one-strike-out' policy for illegal and counterfeit product sales through discussions at the self-regulation committee. Additionally, it plans to prepare measures to prevent 'dark patterns and false review damages' by the first half of next year.
Lee Kwang-yong, Naver's policy strategy lead, explained, "Through 'AI Ride' supporting the digital transformation (DX) of small merchants, we provide marketing and technical education programs utilizing AI to tenant companies, and through 'Project Kkot,' we will strengthen support for small merchants by offering quick settlements, partial commission exemptions, and guaranteed loans."
Danggeun, a local community platform, plans to strengthen self-regulation by introducing 'pre-notification of prohibited transaction items.' To actively resolve disputes between individuals, it will also launch a 'Dispute Mediation Center' within this month. The predictability of dispute resolution will be enhanced through a dispute casebook.
Coupang will launch a service within the year that allows tenant companies to receive advance settlement and payment when purchasing materials using check cards. It also plans to continuously expand win-win projects for small merchants, such as supporting their overseas expansion and holding win-win promotional events within the 'Good Store' category.
Woowa Brothers announced that it is preparing a 100 billion KRW-scale 'Agreement Guarantee Program' to help small merchants facing financial difficulties easily obtain loans. To expand the social safety net for delivery workers, it will also provide a 'specialized insurance product for delivery workers' at about 20% cheaper than market prices within the year.
Minister Lee Jong-ho of the Ministry of Science and ICT said, "Since platform companies have a tremendous influence on people's lives, there is a strong call to solve related livelihood issues. I ask you to take the lead in efforts to achieve tangible results that can be felt on the ground."
