The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province has created a 10,000㎡ "Fine Dust Blocking Forest" in the Suwon Industrial Complex (Suwon Delta Plex).
On the 7th, Suwon City announced that it completed the third phase of the Green Infrastructure Construction Project for the Suwon Industrial Complex on October 31 at 1166 Gosaek-dong, Gwonseon-gu.
The Green Infrastructure Construction Project aims to respond to climate change by creating a fine dust blocking forest around the Suwon Industrial Complex to reduce the heat island effect and block fine dust, while providing a resting space for local residents and workers.
Suwon City, with subsidies from the Korea Forest Service and Gyeonggi Province, carried out the first phase in 2020 and the second phase in 2022, creating a forest covering approximately 70,000㎡.
In the area of the third phase project, covering 10,000㎡, 3,516 trees of 39 species including pine, bald cypress, and maple; 46,845 shrubs of 25 species such as Nandina and golden euonymus; and about 600,000 plants of 26 species including Liriope were planted.
With the completion of the third phase, a total fine dust forest approximately 4 km in length and covering an area equivalent to 11 soccer fields (about 80,000㎡) has been established around the Suwon Industrial Complex.
Notably, this year's project site includes themed spaces by tree species such as maple forest, magnolia forest, and hydrangea forest, as well as small-scale gardens. This allows enjoyment of seasonal flowers and foliage, in addition to the functional role of the urban forest.
An official from Suwon City's Parks and Greenery Division stated, "We will expand urban forests not only in the Suwon Industrial Complex but also in areas prone to fine dust generation to respond to climate change," adding, "We will strive to improve the living environment and quality of life for local residents."
