Former national fencing representative Nam Hyun-hee (42) once again denied allegations of being an accomplice in the fraud charges against her remarriage partner Jeon Cheong-jo (27), stating, "I am ashamed and sorry for causing a commotion in the world."
On the 2nd, Nam's legal representative sent a text message to reporters saying, "Rather than responding loudly to Jeon and others, we will quietly cooperate actively with the investigation and submit all evidence to the investigative authorities."
Nam also apologized for the suspicion of conspiracy in the crime, saying, "I am truly ashamed and sorry for causing a commotion in the world." However, regarding the suspicion of conspiracy in the crime, she denied being an accomplice, stating, "I was exploited more thoroughly than anyone else, and just before becoming the final target, Jeon's fraudulent activities were exposed."
Regarding the Bentley car worth over 300 million won that Jeon allegedly gifted to Nam, she claimed, "The Bentley was a surprise proposal gift from Jeon." Previously, Jeon partially admitted to the crime in a media interview before his arrest, saying, "Nam wanted to drive the Bentley, so I bought it with cash," and "It was indeed purchased with the victims' money."
Nam's side explained, "After belatedly realizing Jeon's fraudulent activities, we tried to return the vehicle immediately, but the situation was complicated, and while considering how to proceed, it caused greater misunderstandings."
Regarding why the vehicle was not returned directly to Jeon, they explained, "At first, we intended to do so, but Jeon was on the run, so we did not know where he was," and "Returning the vehicle could have led to accusations of being an accomplice."
As for why the items were not returned directly to the victims or sold to pay them in cash, they stated, "Nam did not know the scale of the victims or the amount of damage per victim, so she could not hand over the items directly," and "In the case of selling, there was fear of being misunderstood as secretly selling and hiding the proceeds, so it was not done."
Nam's legal representative added, "(Nam) currently wants to handle all items related to Jeon immediately," and "We have formally requested the police to seize items related to Jeon, including the Bentley, today."
Jeon, who is charged with fraud under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, will undergo a warrant hearing on the 3rd. The decision on detention is expected to be made as early as that night.
The police, who started an investigation after receiving complaints and accusations that Jeon embezzled money under the pretext of investment from people he met through lectures and other activities, arrested Jeon on the 31st of last month.
The police have identified 15 victims so far, with damages exceeding 1.9 billion won. During this process, suspicions arose that Nam may have conspired or abetted Jeon's crimes, along with claims that the Bentley and luxury bags gifted by Jeon to Nam should be returned to the victims.
Additionally, YouTuber 'Caracula' revealed on his YouTube channel in a video titled "Who Owns Jeon Cheong-jo's Maybach?" that the actual owner of Jeon's Mercedes-Benz S-Class, previously known as a Maybach, is Nam.
According to the vehicle registration records, the car was released in March 2022 under the name of a leasing company called Mercedes-Benz Financial Korea. However, according to Caracula, the contract holder and actual owner of the vehicle is Nam, and there has been no change in ownership or contract holder to date.
Caracula also revealed that contrary to popular belief, the vehicle is not a Maybach but a Mercedes-Benz. The exact model of the vehicle is the "Mercedes-Benz S450 4MATIC."
Caracula questioned, "Did Jeon know he was driving a fake Maybach? Or did Jeon make it into a fake Maybach?" He prefaced by saying, "This is my personal opinion and speculation," and speculated, "It seems Nam turned the Mercedes-Benz S-Class she bought with her ex-husband into a fake Maybach and told Jeon, 'Since I gave you mine, buy me a Bentley.'"
