Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, has strengthened crackdowns on abandoned vehicles, including deregistered vehicles (unlicensed vehicles), and has decided to operate a dedicated investigation team to vigorously pursue those who abandon cars.
On the 2nd, the district announced that it has launched crackdowns targeting those who abandon vehicles, together with investigators from its own Special Judicial Police Team (Special Investigation Team). The investigation targets vehicle owners (occupants) who abandon cars on roads or private property, punishable under the Automobile Management Act by imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won.
This year, the Special Investigation Team cracked down on 931 abandoned vehicles, towing 173 of them and forcibly scrapping 125. Additionally, they investigated those who abandoned vehicles, imposing fines in 117 cases and referring them to the prosecution. The district plans to actively investigate suspects during holidays and nighttime for those who find it difficult to appear during working hours.

Yeonsu-gu is located near Incheon Port, which exports more than 80% of the country's used car export volume, and a large-scale used car export complex is established nearby, leading to rampant illegal parking to reduce storage fees in the Okryeon and Dongchun-dong areas. As a result, complaints have been continuously received about deregistered vehicles being unsightly abandoned on roads and residential areas. This year, the district launched a resident monitoring group and, for the first time nationwide, installed immobilizers (shackles) to increase the intensity of crackdowns.
In particular, the act of abandoning deregistered vehicles is regarded as a criminal act that not only damages the urban landscape but also threatens traffic safety. Therefore, the district decided to strongly investigate the offenders as well as crack down on abandoned vehicles.
Lee Jae-ho, Mayor of Yeonsu-gu, said, "The district's response to abandoned vehicle crackdowns is not yet at a 100% satisfactory level," adding, "We will continue to eradicate illegal acts related to abandoned vehicles through various measures and persistent crackdowns."
