The Anyangcheon in Yeongdeungpo, a ‘waterside hub cultural city,’ is being reborn as a new attraction.

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will create a ‘waterside culture and relaxation space’ along Anyangcheon and revitalize the area through a ‘waterside experimental project’ and a ‘Winter Festival.’

Following its selection in 2023 for the ‘Seoul City Waterside Vitality Hub Creation Contest,’ the district will collaborate with Seoul City to develop a waterside culture and relaxation space along Anyangcheon with a budget of 3 billion KRW.

The project site covers approximately 22,000㎡ of waterside space around the Yangpyeong 2 pedestrian overpass in the lower reaches of Anyangcheon. It boasts excellent accessibility, being a 5-minute walk from Seonyudo Station on Line 9, and features outstanding ecological scenery around the artificial island. Additionally, numerous community sports facilities are available, making it a popular spot for residents to relax and enjoy leisure activities.

Accordingly, by 2025, the district plans to establish ▲a ‘waterside relaxation space’ offering views of Anyangcheon’s beautiful natural scenery, ▲a ‘waterside observatory and complex cultural space’ that can be used as cafes and galleries, ▲a ‘waterside activity space’ suitable for picnics and small-scale cultural activities, and ▲a ‘walking space’ where visitors can comfortably enjoy the waterside landscape.

Through this, Anyangcheon is expected to be newly spotlighted as an everyday waterside relaxation space accessible on foot and a regional vitality hub linking the waterside with local cultural resources.

Moreover, Yeongdeungpo-gu and the Yeongdeungpo Cultural Foundation will hold ‘#Experimenting #OO at the #Waterside’ and the ‘Winter Festival’ to make Anyangcheon a space for citizens’ rest, interaction, and cultural enjoyment.

‘#Experimenting #OO at the #Waterside’ is a cultural experimental project themed around Yeongdeungpo-gu’s waterside. Citizens can submit ideas, and selected projects will receive an experimental fund of 1 million KRW. During November, 40 waterside experimental projects will take place at various locations along Anyangcheon and other waterside areas.

Additionally, for about ten days at the end of December, the ‘Anyangcheon Winter Festival’ will be held against the backdrop of Anyangcheon’s natural environment. The Winter Festival will feature a ‘Light Walkway’ along the embankment trail, utilizing beautiful lighting and media art, as well as various programs in which citizens can participate. It will offer a variety of sights and entertainment to celebrate Christmas and the year-end season.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Yeongdeungpo is Seoul’s representative waterside hub connecting the Han River, Saetgang, Anyangcheon, and Dorimcheon, and it is the only legal cultural city in Seoul. We will actively promote the activation of waterside culture through expanding waterside cultural infrastructure and supporting various cultural events.” He added, “Please look forward to the transformation of Anyangcheon into a new living vitality hub that enhances the quality of life for our residents.”
