How Are Smart Devices Used in Classes? ... Ulsan Office of Education Releases Class Videos

The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education will release a video on its YouTube channel on November 1st, showcasing how school classes have changed through the use of educational information technology.

Educational information technology (Edutech) is a compound word of Education and Technology, referring to products and services that enhance educational effectiveness by utilizing digital technology.

This video was produced to show citizens how electronic whiteboards and smart devices are being used in classes at various schools recently, aiming to alleviate concerns about the use of smart devices.

The 8-minute video features teachers from Taehwa Elementary School and Ihwa Middle School appearing in person to demonstrate how educational information technology tools are used in actual classes. It also shows the advantages of science information technology classes and how the disadvantages can be supplemented.

Additionally, it shows how classes using smart tools such as Padlet, Allo, and CoSpaces stimulate students' learning motivation and assist in problem-solving and collaboration.

Taehwa Elementary students observed nearby plants using the camera on smart pads during science class and created a plant guidebook using a program called Canva. Then, each student uploaded their plant guidebook to Padlet to present and share it. They also created a virtual reality space highlighting the characteristics of various plants using CoSpaces.

Ihwa Middle School students worked on refining posters containing loanwords and foreign words into Korean using online tools during Korean language class. Students quickly and easily edited the content using online tools and shared the results by uploading them to Allo.

Kim Hye-young, a teacher at Ihwa Middle School, addressed concerns about using smart devices in class by saying, “Depending on the goals and content of the class, we are combining writing on paper with classes using online tools.”

She added, “The smart pads provided by the Office of Education have protective measures installed to block access to harmful websites for youth, and teachers can control the devices in real-time using the smart device management system.”

Kim Deok-woo, a teacher at Taehwa Elementary School, said, “To prevent excessive immersion in digital devices, the school is strengthening digital literacy education and conducting collaborative classes to ensure that disparities in digital device usage do not lead to learning gaps.”

An official from the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education stated, “We hope this video will increase understanding of classroom lessons changing through digital education and help parents who have been worried about smart device usage to resolve their concerns.”
