Authorities Plan Euthanasia Following Series of Dog Bite Incidents
"No Fault of Stray Dogs" Sparks Backlash on SNS
A tragic incident occurred in China where a two-year-old girl was fatally bitten by stray dogs, and a Taiwanese actress has faced backlash for defending stray dogs.
Taiwanese actress Chen Chao-yen spoke out on the 21st about the incident in Chengdu, China, where a two-year-old girl was brutally killed by large dogs, drawing criticism from netizens, according to Singaporean media outlet '8days' on the 27th.
On the 16th, a dog attack incident at a large apartment complex on the outskirts of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, was captured on video and spread across social media, shocking many. The footage was so brutal that some questioned its authenticity.
According to reports, the two-year-old girl was mercilessly attacked by several large dogs, including Rottweilers, and collapsed unconscious on the lawn. She suffered severe injuries such as kidney rupture and was rushed to the hospital but ultimately passed away.
Earlier, in Jiangsu Province, incidents of dog attacks, including one where an elderly person was attacked while trying to pet a dog, led to growing public concern about stray dogs. Chinese authorities announced plans to treat large dogs not registered on the pet list as strays and euthanize them.
Known as an animal lover, Chen Chao-yen responded to the news on her social media, posting, "My heart aches! Stray dogs are not at fault. Please do not harm lost animals!" which made her a target of netizens.
The post was met with criticism such as, "Two-year-olds and elderly people were bitten, but no one says anything about them," "So are you saying the bitten girl is at fault?" "If you don't understand the pain of being bitten by a dog, don't speak for them," and "Have you ever thought about how much that girl suffered?" Some even mocked her by posting photos of her eating seafood, questioning, "Do you want to protect marine life too?"
Another celebrity who spoke out for stray dog protection faced backlash as well. Chinese actress Lan Xi had to delete a video about protecting stray animals from her social media, and male host Yang Di was banned from social media after posting a video urging the public "not to kill dogs."
