Yongin City to Install at 6 Intersections Starting Next Year
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 26th that it will establish an adaptive signal system on a 7.1 km section of National Road No. 42, Jungbu-daero, connecting Mapyeong-dong in Cheoin-gu to Yangji-myeon, from Sinpyeong Samgeori to Chugye 1-ri Entrance Samgeori.
This adaptive signal system installation is a result of being selected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '2024 National Road Adaptive Signal Installation Project' competition.
'Adaptive signal' refers to a system that detects vehicle flow through video and prioritizes left-turn signals only when there are left-turning vehicles. Additionally, pedestrians must press a pedestrian-activated signal button to trigger vehicle stop signals and pedestrian lights to cross the crosswalk. Establishing an adaptive signal system helps avoid unnecessary signal waiting, thereby reducing the likelihood of traffic congestion on major roads with heavy traffic volume.

The city currently operates adaptive signal systems at 21 locations on national and local roads, including Yangji-myeon Chugye 2-ri Entrance Samgeori and Chugye Sanjang Front Samgeori. The city explained that compared to before the installation of adaptive signals, the average travel speed increased by about 16 km/h, and travel time was reduced by approximately 25 seconds.
The section where the adaptive signal system will be installed this time connects the downtown area of Cheoin-gu with Yangji IC on the Yeongdong Expressway and the direction of Icheon. This area experiences habitual congestion due to weekday commuting vehicles as well as freight trucks pouring in from nearby logistics centers, with an average daily traffic volume of 32,606 vehicles. In 2022 alone, there were a total of 77 traffic accidents in this section, resulting in 1 fatality and numerous serious and minor injuries.
The city will invest 371 million KRW in national funds secured through this competition and 215 million KRW in city funds to install adaptive signal systems at six intersections within the project section starting next year. The system consists of one video detector that confirms left-turning vehicles, one traffic signal controller, and one pedestrian-activated signal button pressed by pedestrians intending to cross the crosswalk.
The city plans to sign a business agreement with the Suwon Regional Land Management Office under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport early next year to ensure smooth project progress, complete the detailed design, and begin construction around March.
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin Special City, said, "Since we have already confirmed the effectiveness of adaptive signals, we will do our best to promptly promote this project to alleviate traffic inconveniences for citizens."
