Gwangju Seo-gu Creates Dementia Prevention Health Stairs in 5 Locations

Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Ikang) announced on the 23rd that it has established dementia prevention health stairs at five locations frequently used by local elderly residents, including the dementia-safe village, welfare centers in Pungam-dong and Sangmu 2-dong administrative welfare centers, and Kumho, Ssangchon, and Siyoung Comprehensive Social Welfare Centers.

Seo-gu attached various health information such as the 3.3.3 dementia prevention rules, daily exercise methods, and mental health guidelines on the front of staircases, walls, and elevators of each building to help residents easily access dementia-related information in daily life and promote healthy lifestyle habits.

Stair climbing exercise allows for easy and quick strength and aerobic exercise without special equipment, which can help strengthen muscles, reduce body fat, and improve cardiopulmonary function.

In particular, it promotes blood circulation and smooth oxygen delivery in the body, activating brain cells, making it an effective physical activity for dementia prevention.

Jung In-guk, head of the Seo-gu Dementia Safety Center, said, “We hope residents use the dementia prevention health stairs to prevent dementia and develop healthy lifestyle habits. We will continue to cooperate with various local institutions to create a dementia-friendly environment that residents can easily access dementia prevention activities in daily life.”

Meanwhile, Seo-gu has designated Sangmu 2-dong and Pungam-dong as dementia-safe villages, operating customized programs for dementia patients, their families, and local residents, and leading the creation of a dementia-friendly environment that all local residents can feel through outreach early dementia screening, dementia awareness improvement, and prevention education.
