Songpa-gu Seokchon Lake West Side 'Hosudangil' Alley Commercial Area Development Kicks Off

Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) is set to actively promote the growth of the Seokchon Lake west-side alley commercial district, recently named ‘Hosudang-gil’ in July.

‘Hosudang-gil’ refers to the commercial area around Baekjegobun-ro 39-gil, located on the west side of Seokchon Lake along Songpa-daero. It is home to over 200 businesses, including restaurants that have been operating for more than 20 years and beloved local eateries. However, in recent years, the east-side commercial districts centered around Saesong-ri Dan-gil and Bangi Matgol have gained popularity among the 20s and 30s generation, causing the west side to lose relative vitality.

In response, since July this year, the district office has been working with the Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation to revitalize the ‘Hosudang-gil’ commercial area, achieving its first results on the 20th.

First, a sculpture was installed to guide visitors to ‘Hosudang-gil.’ The sculpture, measuring 430 cm by 180 cm, features lettering designed to harmonize with the existing Songri Dan-gil sculpture. It serves as a signpost encouraging visitors who come to Seokchon Lake and Songri Dan-gil to naturally find their way to Hosudang-gil.

At the unveiling ceremony held on the 20th, over 50 merchants and residents attended, expressing high hopes for the commercial district’s revitalization. One merchant said, “Since naming it ‘Hosudang-gil,’ it has been frequently mentioned on blogs, cafes, and other social media, raising expectations for the district’s growth.”

The district office also collaborated with the Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation on a project incorporating university students’ ideas. Six university teams from Seoul were matched one-to-one with businesses to propose sales increase strategies tailored to the consumption perspectives of the MZ generation. These included identifying unique features through review analysis, suggesting phrases for Naver Map descriptions, producing promotional materials with repeated keywords on social media, and organizing various events.

Additionally, the district carried out ▲development of a ‘Hosudang-gil’ character in cooperation with nearby Ilsin Girls’ Commercial High School ▲production of character aprons to unify the commercial district’s image ▲creation of promotional booklets and videos containing commercial district information ▲consulting support for 20 businesses within the district.

Considering the expected increase in visitors to the Seokchon Lake area due to the ‘Songpa-daero Luxury Street Development’ and various cultural and artistic events, the district plans to focus on extending foot traffic from the east side to the west side of the lake. Upcoming projects at Seokchon Lake include the creation of a Media Forest, the ‘Lake Art Mural Project’ under the Jamsu Bridge, and the Seokchon Lake Luminarie event running from late October through February next year.

District Mayor Seo Gang-seok stated, “‘Hosudang-gil’ is close to Songpa landmarks such as Seokchon Lake, Lotte World Tower, and Garak Market, giving it great growth potential,” adding, “We will continue to support ‘Hosudang-gil’ so that it becomes a landmark comparable to Songri Dan-gil and plays a central role in the balanced development of the local commercial districts.”
