As the autumn leaves change color, the season deepens. How about experiencing the autumn atmosphere along with cultural festivals held throughout Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Seung-ro) this coming weekend?
‘5th Seokgwan-dong Uireung Cultural Festival’ held on the 21st from 10 AM to 5 PM at Uireung and Seokgwan Elementary School
The Seokgwan-dong Uireung Cultural Festival will take place on the 21st. The festival begins with a reenactment of King Yeongjo’s royal procession.
At 10 AM, the royal procession will depart from Uireung and head toward Seokgwan Elementary School. A 1.3 km parade will be held in conjunction with the car-free street event, providing a visual spectacle. At the destination, Seokgwan Elementary School playground, a reenactment of the traditional Korean drum duel (gyeokjaeng) and the musical “Gyeongjong Sujeong Sillok” will be performed.
Following this, high-quality congratulatory performances by local art groups and students from Korea National University of Arts will take place. Eight teams will compete in a resident singing contest, and invited singers such as Geum Jandi and the idol boy group The Dustin will perform to create an even more spectacular stage.
Residents will operate hands-on experience booths including making wooden tile pot holders, hairpins, face tattoos, toy recycling, and knitting crafts. Alongside a sharing bazaar, food trucks will be available, offering a rich variety of entertainment and food for visitors.
‘9th Jangwi Buma Festival’ held on the 21st from 1 PM to 5:30 PM at Jinheung Seonwon (Buma House) and Jangwi Elementary School
The ‘Jangwi Buma Festival’ will be held on the 21st. After a four-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the event’s return makes it especially meaningful this year.
At 1 PM, a traditional royal wedding of Princess Deokon, the third daughter of King Sunjo of Joseon, and her husband, Buma Dowi (Royal In-law Commander) Namnyeongwi Yun Uiseon, will be reenacted at Jinheung Seonwon (Buma House). At 2 PM, a parade and paebaek ceremony (traditional wedding ritual) of the bride and groom will be held at Jangwi Elementary School, followed by a pre-ceremony performance.
At 3 PM, the opening ceremony will be hosted by MC Kim Jeong-ryeol, featuring invited singer performances and a resident talent show. A lucky draw with prizes including TVs will be held. Additionally, a food market, traditional games, and various children’s experience booths will be set up, making it a festival full of sights and fun activities.
‘5th Wolgok Moonlight Festival’ held on the 21st from 3 PM to 9 PM at Wolgok 2-dong Dalbit Intersection
From 3 PM to 9 PM on the 21st, the ‘5th Wolgok Moonlight Festival’ will be held around the Dalbit Intersection in Wolgok 2-dong. This resident-centered local festival, themed around ‘moon’ and ‘light’ derived from the name Wolgok (月谷) dong, attracts over 10,000 visitors annually.
The festival is divided into five zones offering various activities such as craft DIY, ball pools, making cheongsachorong (traditional Korean lanterns), soap bubble making, drone experiences, recycling crafts, and traditional games that foster intergenerational harmony. There will also be bazaars, flea markets, and food booths.
To boost the festival’s excitement, from 3 PM, busking performances by welfare center performing arts clubs and Dongduk Women’s University art majors will be held on the Starlight Stage in front of the university’s Centennial Hall. On the Moonlight Stage in Dalbit Square, performances by local artists, the gugak pop band ‘Ox’, trot singers Jung Mi-ae, Chun Gil, and Shin Nara will take place, promising a wonderful event.
‘10th Samseon-dong Seonnyeo Festival’ held on the 22nd from 11 AM to 5 PM at Hanyangdoseong (Jangsu Village) and Seongbukcheon Fountain Plaza
On the 22nd, the ‘Samseon-dong Seonnyeo Festival’ will be held at Hanyangdoseong (Jangsu Village) and Seongbukcheon Fountain Plaza.
The festival begins with a beautiful scene of a seonnyeo (fairy) descending in Jangsu Village, Samseon-dong. The Seonnyeo Descending Parade starts at Hanyangdoseong (Jangsu Village), passes through Donam Market, and continues as a street march to Seongbukcheon Fountain Plaza. Samulnori (traditional percussion) and the municipal wind band lead the procession with festival flags, transforming the streets into various performance venues.
After the parade, a community harmony event follows. Hosted by comedian Kim In-seok, the program includes an opening ceremony, resident singing contest, autonomous program performances, congratulatory performances, and prize drawings, creating a stage where multiple generations come together.
With about 1,000 participants and around 10,000 visitors expected, Seongbuk-gu has conducted prior safety inspections and will deploy approximately 150 safety personnel on site. The Seongbuk Fire Station will also have ambulances on standby for emergencies.
