China protests Japan's Kishida Yasukuni offerings as "diplomatic protest"

The Chinese government strongly criticized Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the 17th for offering tribute at Yasukuni Shrine, where Class A war criminals from the Pacific War are enshrined.

Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on the same day, "Yasukuni Shrine is a spiritual tool and symbol of Japanese militarism that instigated aggressive wars abroad," adding, "China firmly opposes Japan's negative actions and has lodged a stern protest with Japan." China uses the term "stern protest" in diplomatic contexts when objecting to specific issues.

Spokesperson Mao added, "We urge Japan to face its history of aggression squarely, maintain a sincere attitude of reflection, thoroughly break away from militarism, and earn the trust of Asian neighboring countries and the international community through concrete actions."

On the occasion of the autumn festival rites (memorial service) that began on the same day, Prime Minister Kishida offered a tribute called "Masakaki" in the name of "Prime Minister Fumio Kishida." Since assuming office in October 2021, Kishida has not visited Yasukuni Shrine directly during the spring and autumn festival rites but has offered tributes instead.

Three ministers of the Kishida Cabinet?Yoshitaka Shindo, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization; Sanae Takaichi, Minister in charge of Economic Security; and Yasutoshi Nishimura, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry?visited Yasukuni Shrine to pay respects during the autumn festival rites.
