Dongdaemun-gu, Carbon Neutral Employee Ihaenggwan Launch Ceremony and Climate Crisis Special Lecture

Appointment of Employee Lee Haeng-gwan and Inauguration Ceremony as the First Step Toward Carbon Neutral Organizational Culture Innovation... Special Lecture by Ministry of Environment Climate Carbon Policy Director Discusses Local Government Roles for Carbon Neutrality in the Climate Crisis Era

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) held an inauguration ceremony on the 16th at the 5th-floor Planning Situation Room of the district office, appointing department representative employees and the 2nd Dodreumer Carbon Neutrality Division staff as 'Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutrality Implementers.'

The inauguration ceremony was organized to have public institutions take the lead in understanding carbon neutrality goals and spreading a culture of practice. Attendees included the mayor, deputy mayor, representatives from 37 departments, and staff from the 2nd Dodreumer Carbon Neutrality Division. 'Dodreumer' was launched last year to achieve innovation in district administration through creative policy idea discovery and to improve organizational culture through horizontal communication. The name means 'people who knock on the door of change and create the dreams and future of Dongdaemun-gu.'

In the first part of the ceremony, the vision for Dongdaemun-gu's carbon neutrality, past achievements, and the roles of the Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutrality Implementers were shared.

Going forward, the Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutrality Implementers will take the lead in ▲discovering ideas for practicing carbon neutrality in daily life ▲encouraging participation in the pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one ton per person at department events ▲introducing eco-friendly paper materials and certificate cases when purchasing office supplies ▲reducing single-use items by lending shared dispensers and reusable cups produced by the Climate Environment Division.

In the second part, a special lecture on climate crisis response was given by Changheum Lee, Director of the Climate Carbon Policy Office at the Ministry of Environment. The lecture covered the severity of the climate crisis, the necessity of achieving carbon neutrality, domestic and international carbon neutrality policies, and the role of local governments in realizing carbon neutrality.

Through this inauguration ceremony and special lecture, the district plans to establish a culture of carbon neutrality practice within the organization and strengthen capabilities for climate crisis response and carbon neutrality practice through training for carbon neutrality implementers and performance checks by department.

Ilpyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “I believe this appointment of carbon neutrality implementers is the first step toward organizational culture innovation for carbon neutrality practice.” He added, “In 2024, we will appoint carbon neutrality implementers for each neighborhood and hold an excellent case presentation meeting to spread the culture of carbon neutrality practice throughout the district, continuing efforts to realize 'Dongdaemun-gu, a 2050 Carbon Neutral City.'”
