Busan Port, Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollutant Emission Estimation System Deemed 'Appropriate'

Busan Port Authority (BPA) received an "appropriate" evaluation after having its greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission calculation system at Busan Port verified by a specialized institution.

Since July, BPA conducted a voluntary verification of the Busan Port greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission calculation system over three months by commissioning the Korea Quality Foundation. The Korea Quality Foundation is a specialized institution designated by the National Institute of Environmental Research for greenhouse gas emission verification.

After reviewing BPA's standards for calculating greenhouse gases and air pollutants, as well as its information and management systems, the Korea Quality Foundation gave an "appropriate" opinion on both the greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission calculation methods.

This year, BPA calculated the five-year (2017?2021) greenhouse gas emissions to establish the ‘2050 Busan Port Carbon Neutral Comprehensive Plan.’

Emissions of seven types of air pollutants (particulate matter, fine particulate matter, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds) have been calculated since 2018.

Although the verification process for these emission calculation results is not a legal obligation, BPA enhanced credibility through voluntary verification.

The verification process consisted of document and on-site audits of the calculation standards and information and management systems for both greenhouse gases and air pollutants. The verification results also evaluated the data and information used in emission calculations as appropriate and reasonable.

Lee Sang-kwon, Head of BPA’s Construction Headquarters, stated, “The data on greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions are important foundational materials for establishing and evaluating environmental policies at Busan Port. We hope that this voluntary verification will enable the Busan Port greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission data to be used as more reliable information.”
