Gwangju Seo-gu Congratulates Asian Games Gold Medalist Fencer Kang Young-mi

Kang Young-mi, a fencing athlete representing South Korea and the face of Seo-gu, Gwangju, has returned home in glory.

Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Yi-gang) announced on the 11th that it held a congratulatory event for Kang Young-mi, who won the gold medal in the women's team ?p?e event at the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games the previous afternoon.

The Korean women's ?p?e fencing team earned the honor of winning the team gold medal for the first time in 21 years since the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

The women's ?p?e team, consisting of Kang Young-mi (Gwangju Seo-gu Office), Choi In-jeong (Gyeryong City Office), Song Se-ra (Busan Metropolitan City Office), and Lee Hye-in (Gangwon Provincial Office), won 36-34 after a fierce match against Hong Kong in the team final held on the 27th of last month at the Hangzhou Dianzi University Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China.

On the 10th, Seo-gu, Gwangju invited Kang Young-mi, the gold medalist of the Hangzhou Asian Games, to hold a congratulatory event.

Kang Young-mi said, "Thanks to the strong support and encouragement from Mayor Kim Yi-gang of Seo-gu and the residents of Seo-gu, I was able to achieve good results," adding, "I will continue to repay by doing my best in my position."

Kang will also join the 2024 Paris Olympic team, marking her 10th consecutive year wearing the Taegeuk mark on the international stage since 2015, pursuing gold.

Meanwhile, the Seo-gu Office fencing team from Gwangju will participate in the 104th National Sports Festival held in Jeonnam starting on the 13th, showcasing the skills they have honed so far.

Mayor Kim Yi-gang of Seo-gu said, "The Seo-gu Office fencing team is the pride and honor of Seo-gu," and added, "I sincerely hope and support that both the coach and players, who have worked hard with one heart and mind, achieve valuable results."
