AI to Detect 'Weapon Assaults and Violence' in Subway... Pilot Introduction on Line 5 Next Year

AI Analyzes Video and Communicates Situations to Control Staff

A technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect abnormal behavior in subway stations in advance has been developed and is scheduled to be pilot introduced on Seoul Subway Line 5 next year.

On the 9th, Seoul Metro and the Seoul Digital Foundation announced that they signed a business agreement between the two organizations on the 6th and have started developing a "Generative AI-based Abnormal Behavior Detection and Tracking Model Planning Research." Generative AI is a technology that creates new content by utilizing existing content such as text, audio, images, and videos.

The two organizations plan to complete this research by December and then select one station on Subway Line 5 to conduct a demonstration test starting next year. If its effectiveness is proven, this technology will be introduced to all stations and even inside trains in the future.

The model works by having AI recognize abnormal behaviors such as weapon rampages or violence inside the subway in real time and relay the situation to control center personnel. This involves applying "image captioning technology," which stores descriptive information and behavior patterns from closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage as text. If various incidents or accidents occur, the AI analyzes the CCTV footage, converts it into text form, and notifies in real time. This enables quick situation assessment and initial response.

A Seoul Metro official stated, "Previously, when unusual incidents occurred, staff had to repeatedly review the footage to accurately understand the situation, which took a lot of time. However, with this technology applied, the explanation of the before and after situation can be checked at a glance in writing, enabling immediate initial action."

Baek Ho, President of Seoul Metro, said, "This will be a technology that can effectively respond to incidents and accidents targeting unspecified citizens, such as rampages in the subway recently. By combining the corporation’s system with the foundation’s AI, big data, and other digital technology capabilities, we will do our best to create a safe subway and ensure passenger safety through joint research."

Kang Yo-sik, Chairman of the Seoul Digital Foundation, also said, "Through this agreement, we will protect citizens’ safe daily lives with AI technology and strive to expand digital services in urban railways."
