Screening of the Film 'Yeopjip' to Improve Awareness of Mental Disabilities, Followed by Audience Q&A... Performance by 5-Member Band 'Kongnamul Band' Composed of People with Mental Disabilities
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced on October 13 that it will hold a cultural event at the Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center to commemorate 'Mental Health Day (10.10.).'
The event will take place on October 13 from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Geumcheon Musical Center under the theme "The Value of Understanding Differences, and Together!" It was organized to improve social prejudice against mental illness and to raise human rights sensitivity toward people with mental disabilities.
First, the five-member "Kongnamul Band," formed by individuals experiencing mental disabilities, will perform music for the residents. They will play familiar Korean songs such as "Nae Sarang Nae Gyeote" (My Love Beside Me), "10wol-ui Eoneu Meotjin Nare" (A Wonderful Day in October), "Georiseo" (On the Street), and "Gwanghwamun Yeonga" (Gwanghwamun Love Song), as well as various other pieces, offering the audience a sense of relaxation and enjoyment.
Following the performance, the film "Yeopjip" (Next Door), which depicts the lives of people with mental disabilities, will be screened. Geumcheon-gu planned the screening to vividly reveal the struggles, rehabilitation, and daily lives of people with mental disabilities to residents, encouraging empathy and eliminating social stigma and prejudice.
After the film screening, there will be a discussion session with Choi Dong-pyo, director of the mental rehabilitation facility "Hanmaeum-ui Jip" (House of One Mind). Attendees will be able to freely share their thoughts and feelings about the film and ask questions about mental disabilities.
Additionally, a mental health experience booth open to all Geumcheon-gu residents will be operated.
Residents wishing to participate in the event can apply by calling the Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center by 4 PM on October 11.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "I hope this event will help improve residents' awareness of mental disabilities and eliminate social stigma and prejudice."
