Nobel Chemistry Prize, 'Quantum Dot Research' Awarded to Bawendi, Brus, and Ekimov... Pre-Release Leak Controversy (Update)

The Nobel Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on the 4th (local time) that this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three individuals: Munji Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexey Ekimov, who discovered and advanced research on quantum dots.

Quantum dots are semiconductor crystals with sizes ranging from a few to several tens of nanometers (nm, one billionth of a meter). By controlling the size of quantum dots through nanotechnology, the bandgap between the valence band and the conduction band changes, allowing control over the movement of electrons between these bands. In other words, it means that the wavelength of energy emitted by electrons as light can be controlled as desired.

The electrical and optical properties that vary depending on the size of quantum dots are applied in ultra-high-definition displays that reproduce primary colors almost exactly.

However, a highly unusual incident occurred about four hours before the official announcement of this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners, causing controversy. Earlier, Swedish media reported that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences accidentally sent out a press release email containing the list of Nobel Chemistry Prize winners in advance. The Academy stated that "the winners have not yet been decided," attempting to contain the situation, but the actual announced winners were identical to the leaked list.
