Memorial Service for Victims at Seoul City Center Altar
Itaewon Joint Memorial Ceremony Attended by Leaders of Four Major Religions
Sewol Ferry Joint Memorial Ceremony to be Held at '4:16 PM'
On the 29th, Chuseok day, memorial table ceremonies for the families of the Itaewon and Sewol Ferry disaster victims were held consecutively at the downtown Seoul memorial altars. The 10·29 Itaewon Disaster Families Association held a joint memorial rite from around 3 p.m. at the joint memorial altar for the 10·29 Itaewon disaster victims set up at Seoul Plaza in Jung-gu, Seoul. About 100 family members and citizens attended.
The Chuseok memorial table included songpyeon, various jeon (Korean pancakes), fruits, as well as chicken, coffee, and sliced cake. Lee Jeong-min, the association's operations committee member, said, "I think our children will not feel so lonely today. Many people have gathered to spend Chuseok together, so the children will be happy." Representatives from the four major religions (Buddhism, Won Buddhism, Christianity, and Catholicism) also attended the event.
At 4:16 p.m. that day, a memorial table was set up in front of the Sewol Ferry remembrance space at Gwanghwamun Square in Jongno-gu, Seoul, to mark the 10th Chuseok since the Sewol Ferry disaster. This was organized by the 4·16 Sewol Ferry Families Association and others. Coffee, milk, and pizza were placed alongside yakgwa (traditional honey cookies), apples, watermelon, dried persimmons, and other offerings. About 50 people, including Sewol Ferry family members wearing yellow vests, 4·16 Solidarity activists, and citizens, bowed in silent prayer in front of the memorial table and commemorated the victims.
